With only two Aboriginal Victorian Local Government Councillors being elected in the state’s 2020 elections, the Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) has been awarded $50,000 by the State Government to continue its Your Community, Country and Council (YCCC) project.

Intended to provide support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates intending to run for the 2024 elections, the YCCC project has, as a primary goal, a greater number of First Nations people elected to local government.

In this interview, VLGA Inclusion and Diversity Lead Deborah Wu speaks to Connection Matters Radio (CMR) about the formation of a First Nations steering committee for the project, collaboration with the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria and the need for ongoing support.
