In June 2020, the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria (FPAV) called upon the Victorian State Government to establish a Royal Commission into the truth of the state’s history since colonisation.
In March the following year, the Yoo-rrook1 Justice Commission was announced by the Andrews Government. Within two months, the commission was legally established with the powers of a Royal Commission and its five commissioners appointed.
During this first of several interviews with Yoo-rrook commissioners, Aunty Eleanor Bourke, Yoo-rrook Justice Commission Chairperson, discusses some of the finer details of Commission’s guiding document, the Letters Patent.
1. Yoo-rrook means ‘truth’ in the Wemba Wemba/Wamba Wamba language, which is spoken in the north-west region of Victoria.
