CitiPower and Powercor have announced eight scholarships are available to support a Pre-Apprenticeship TAFE Certificate II in Electrotechnology across Dja Dja Wurrung Country (Bendigo), Yorta Yorta Country (Shepparton) and Wurundjeri Country (Burnley).

The scholarship, valued at up to $2,000, will be awarded to eight First Peoples who demonstrate commitment and motivation to building a career in the electrical industry.

The money can be used for costs such as school fees, tools, clothing, rent, childcare or to supplement an income while attending the course.

CitiPower and Powercor First Peoples Engagement Lead, Tegan Miller, said the pre-apprenticeship scholarship program was a unique opportunity and the first of its kind in Victoria.

“This is all about supporting First Peoples to enter the electrical trade industry and breaking down barriers to undertaking a Certificate II in Electrotechnology and building a career pathway in the electrical industry,” Ms Miller said.

“We want to support a more inclusive and diverse workforce, with employees who bring different ideas, backgrounds and perspectives that better reflect the communities we serve.”

“This is the first time we’ve offered this type of pre-apprenticeship scholarship so I’m encouraging anyone interested to please apply.”

CitiPower and Powercor Technical Training Manager, Neil Roberts, said the program follows the success of a similar pre-apprenticeship scholarship for women that has led to a number of permanent roles within the business.

“Our annual apprenticeship program is incredibly sought after and our pre-apprenticeship programs, like this one, are a fantastic way for candidates to get an understanding of the many opportunities a career with CitiPower and Powercor can offer,” Mr Roberts said.

“For those successful, there is no obligation to apply for a role with us, however you will be put on the candidate list for our apprenticeship program when the program opens for applications.”

The four-year apprenticeship program offers a nationally-recognised electrical trade qualification along with benefits such as a nine-day fortnight.

CitiPower and Powercor will also provide scholarship recipients with additional training at depots and guidance to working in the electrical industry.
