VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT’S SHAME

Investigating the Victorian Government’s dubious decision to announce an extension of an Order in Council on the Unprotection of dingoes across North-East and Eastern Victoria.

On the 24th of September 2024, the Premier’s Office of Victoria announced:

Minister for Environment Steve Dimopoulos and Minister for Agriculture Ros Spence today announced the continuation of the dingo unprotection order in north east and eastern Victoria, which permits the control of dingoes on private land and along the boundaries of public land until 1 January 2028.

Victorian Aboriginal News (VAN) was contacted within days by the Taungurung Land and Waters Council, asking us to cover this story. The result is a series of meetings and interviews (many in confidence and off-the-record), all of which point to the clear possibility of a government decision based on factors other than good government and due diligence.

VAN commits to pursuing this story until such time as the Victorian Government enters into appropriate consultation with Traditional Owners, the agricultural industry representatives and other key stakeholders.
